Chelsea vs Gent: Dominant Conference League Win Showcases Squad Depth
Chelsea began their Europa Conference League campaign with a comfortable win over Gent, showing their immense squad depth in a match that ended 4-2. Head coach Enzo Maresca made 11 changes to the side that beat Brighton in the Premier League, yet his rotated team still delivered a dominant performance.
The scoring began in the 12th minute when defender Renato Veiga headed in a pinpoint cross from Mykhailo Mudryk. Chelsea maintained control throughout the first half, demonstrating composure and creativity against the Belgian opposition.
Second-Half Action: Goals and Setbacks
Just 49 seconds into the second half, winger Pedro Neto added to Chelsea’s lead with a powerful near-post finish. Neto latched onto a long ball from Axel Disasi, catching the Gent defense off guard to make it 2-0.
Gent momentarily found hope when defender Tsuyoshi Watanabe headed in a goal in the 50th minute. After a VAR check, the goal stood, giving the visiting side a chance to fight back. However, their joy was short-lived.
Thirteen minutes later, Christopher Nkunku pounced on a loose ball, scoring his seventh goal of the season with a well-placed low shot. Gent goalkeeper Davy Roef couldn’t keep it out, restoring Chelsea’s two-goal cushion.
Midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, who had missed an earlier chance in the first half, capitalized on a defensive error from Watanabe, adding Chelsea’s fourth goal with a clean finish. Gent managed to grab a consolation goal late in the game through Omri Gandelman, who exploited some shaky defending on Chelsea’s left side.
Chelsea's Impressive Squad Depth
This match was a testament to Chelsea’s incredible squad depth. Enzo Maresca fielded a completely different starting XI compared to the one that faced Brighton in their recent Premier League fixture. The lineup included talents like Mudryk, Neto, Dewsbury-Hall, Nkunku, and Tosin Adarabioyo—all rotated in from Chelsea’s impressive 29-man squad.
Notably absent from the lineup were key players like Cole Palmer, Romeo Lavia, and Wesley Fofana, who have been rested for this competition, while Ben Chilwell has seemingly fallen out of favor. Maresca also chose not to field Nicolas Jackson or Jadon Sancho, giving them the night off.
Despite these absences, Chelsea displayed the depth and quality of a well-oiled Premier League-caliber side. Gent, while managing to score two goals through Watanabe and Gandelman, ultimately couldn’t match the quality and depth of Chelsea’s £400 million squad.
The Conference League Campaign: Chelsea's Ambition
Chelsea is aiming to make history by becoming the first team to add a Conference League title to their previous successes in both the Europa League and Champions League. The new 36-team league phase of the competition will see Chelsea vying for a top-eight finish to secure automatic qualification for the knockout rounds.
As the match against Gent showed, Chelsea’s squad is incredibly strong for a competition like the Europa Conference League. The depth of the squad allows them to rotate players while still maintaining a high standard of performance. With their squad valued at around £1.1 billion, it is no surprise that Chelsea is considered the favorite to lift the Conference League trophy this season.
Their opponent, Gent, struggled to compete with Chelsea’s depth and quality. The Belgian side’s most expensive signing, Momodou Sonko, cost just £6 million and spent the match on the bench, highlighting the gap in resources between the two teams.
Despite the scoreline, Gent had some bright moments, with Englishman Archie Brown and Andri Gudjohnsen—son of former Chelsea forward Eidur Gudjohnsen—getting efforts on goal. However, Chelsea’s strength in attack and the quality throughout their lineup proved too much for the Belgians.
The commanding win over Gent showcases Chelsea’s potential to go far in the Europa Conference League. The impressive depth in their squad, even with 11 changes from their Premier League lineup, emphasizes just how dominant they can be in European competition.
Enzo Maresca and his coaching staff will be pleased with the performance, as it highlights the team’s ability to adapt and succeed with different players in various roles. With such a talented and deep squad, Chelsea looks set to make a strong bid for the Conference League title, aiming to add another European trophy to their illustrious history.
