Jack Grealish, the Manchester City playmaker, has opened up about his disappointment over being left out of England’s Euro 2024 squad. The 29-year-old expressed his frustration with former manager Gareth Southgate’s decision, admitting he was “devastated” to miss the tournament where England ultimately lost to Spain in the final.
Speaking on the matter, Grealish said, “I didn’t agree with it. I know I didn’t have my best season, but I still believe I should have gone.” Despite his challenging year, Grealish feels his experience and success at the club level should have secured him a place in the squad. His impressive career includes winning numerous trophies with Manchester City, including the Premier League and Champions League.
However, since Lee Carsley took over as interim manager, Grealish has been given a fresh opportunity to shine for the national team. Carsley trusted the City star by starting him in both of the international matches he has overseen. Grealish, grateful for the chance, stated, “I can’t speak highly enough of him. He’s shown trust in me, and that has made a real difference.”
Grealish's Return to the England Squad
In England’s recent victories over Republic of Ireland and Finland, Grealish made a triumphant return to the starting lineup. He scored in the match against Ireland, showcasing why many believe he should remain a key part of England’s future.
After missing the Euros, Grealish admitted that he felt he had a point to prove, saying, “Of course, I wanted to come back and show everyone what I can do. I’m thankful for the chance and want to repay the trust shown by Carsley.”
Grealish’s football journey has been a remarkable one, from his record-breaking £100m move to Manchester City to becoming a vital part of the squad. While he described missing Euro 2024 as one of the hardest moments of his career, Grealish shared that the birth of his daughter last week was the “best moment of my life.” After rushing to be by his partner’s side, Grealish rejoined City and started their next match just hours after his daughter’s birth.
Solanke’s England Return
Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke is another player who made headlines with his return to the England squad after a seven-year absence. Solanke, 27, last appeared for England in 2017 but has been in top form this season, scoring three goals in eight matches for Spurs. Following his excellent performances, Solanke expressed his gratitude for being called up again, saying, “It means so much. I’ve worked hard to get back here.”
With Harry Kane potentially missing the upcoming match against Greece, Solanke may have the opportunity to lead England’s attack.
Both Grealish and Solanke embody resilience and perseverance in their journeys back to the national team. Their determination and recent performances prove that their contributions to England’s success are far from over.
