Belgium captain Kevin De Bruyne has requested time off from international duties as he manages his playing schedule amidst recent injury troubles. The Manchester City playmaker, who is currently sidelined due to a thigh injury, has missed his club’s last four matches since sustaining the injury in September during a 0-0 Champions League draw against Inter Milan.
The 33-year-old De Bruyne, on track to return to action in mid-October, was already expected to miss Belgium’s upcoming Nations League matches against Italy and France due to the injury. However, Belgium head coach Domenico Tedesco has revealed that De Bruyne has asked to also be excused from November’s matches against Italy and Israel in order to prioritize his recovery.
“I had a long phone conversation with Kevin,” Tedesco explained. “He has asked to skip this camp and also November, to be able to take care of his body. The schedule has become even busier due to the Club World Cup. That’s why he won’t be available for now, but when it really counts – the World Cup – he will be there.”
The increasing demands on football players due to congested schedules have been a growing concern. De Bruyne’s Manchester City teammate, Rodri, voiced his concerns in September, stating that players were close to striking in protest of the packed playing schedule. The increased demands, especially following major international tournaments, have forced players like De Bruyne to prioritize their health and well-being.
Questions had been raised about De Bruyne’s international future after Belgium’s 2-0 loss to France on September 9. However, Tedesco was quick to address these doubts, stating that De Bruyne remains committed to representing Belgium at the highest level.
“He has an injury, but he is very motivated to continue with the Red Devils and to play in the World Cup in 2026,” Tedesco confirmed.
De Bruyne’s absence from the upcoming Nations League matches will undoubtedly be a setback for Belgium, but his decision emphasizes the importance of players taking the necessary time to manage their physical condition. With the 2026 World Cup in his sights, De Bruyne’s current focus remains on recovery and staying fit for the challenges ahead.
De Bruyne’s decision to take time off also sheds light on the growing issue of player welfare in modern football. With an increasing number of tournaments, including the expanded Club World Cup and Nations League fixtures, players are facing an intense schedule that leaves little room for adequate rest and recovery. The need for a balanced approach is becoming ever more critical, as players risk burnout and prolonged injuries. De Bruyne, being an experienced professional, understands the importance of managing his fitness. By prioritizing his well-being now, he aims to return stronger and contribute to both Manchester City and Belgium in the future.
