Interim England manager Lee Carsley has made it clear that his squad selections will be based on merit, avoiding any “copy and paste” choices during his time in charge of the Three Lions. Carsley, 50, has emphasized that each call-up to the England squad should be seen as an achievement, not something to be taken for granted.
Carsley named his latest 25-man squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League matches against Greece and Finland on Thursday. The squad features Tottenham striker Dominic Solanke, who has been recalled to the national team for the first time in seven years.
This latest squad features four changes from last month’s 26-man roster. Carsley’s first squad selection came after taking temporary charge following Gareth Southgate’s departure. Speaking about the changes, Carsley said, “In the back of my mind, I wanted to make sure it feels fresh… that when you get that email or WhatsApp to say that you’ve been called up, it’s an achievement because it shouldn’t be something that is taken for granted.”
He continued, “I thought it was important that it is not just a copy and paste. I want them to feel like they have earned their place in the squad.”
Among the notable omissions from Carsley’s latest England squad are Eberechi Eze, Harry Maguire, Tino Livramento, and Jarrod Bowen. These players were part of the squad that secured victories over the Republic of Ireland and Finland in September.
Taking their places are Jude Bellingham, Kyle Walker, and Dominic Solanke, with Solanke having previously made his only England appearance in a friendly against Brazil in 2017. Aston Villa’s Morgan Rogers, Tottenham’s James Maddison, and Manchester United’s Marcus Rashford have also been overlooked for selection this time.
Discussing the difficult decisions, Carsley said, “The players I’ve left out, I could make a case for them being in, but ultimately, I have to make those decisions. The reality is you want a player to be coming in in top form and fighting for a position in the team.”
England is currently preparing for crucial Nations League matches, and Carsley is aware of their importance as part of the road to World Cup qualification. “Getting out of this Nations League is important for us in terms of setting up the World Cup qualification,” Carsley explained. “Whether I’m here or not, it’s important we are in a favorable pattern and in a position to win the World Cup.”
Carsley has also highlighted England’s impressive attacking options. While attending a UEFA conference last month, other coaches commented on England’s wealth of attacking talent, viewing it as a potential issue. However, Carsley sees it differently.
“When I attended the conference a couple of weeks ago, a lot of the head coaches spoke about how many good players we’ve got, but they almost referred to it as a problem,” he said. “Whereas I am thinking it’s a nice problem to have.”
For the first time, Carsley will have a trio of world-class number 10s available in Jude Bellingham, Phil Foden, and Cole Palmer. He admitted that managing these players could be challenging given their schedules but is confident in finding the right balance.
“With the period of the season we are in, I can probably justify why we wouldn’t start all three of them at the same time in terms of the amount of games they’re playing, what they are going back to, and what they have come from,” Carsley explained. “What’s important is that we get them all on the pitch at some point, and we try to find the balance. But, like I say, I think it’s a nice problem to have.”
Lee Carsley’s England squad will face Greece and Finland in the Nations League, with Carsley eager to build momentum for World Cup qualification. The changes to the squad demonstrate his willingness to make bold decisions and provide opportunities based on performance and merit.
